Summary Description
The general purpose of this position is to supervise the Cleaning Rack and Valve Shop in line with industry and customer specifications and Company principles: improve customer satisfaction, improve profitability, and build relationships with our customers, team members, communities and vendors.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Administers and ensures quality and safety procedures are being followed
* Supervises and coordinates all activities of the railcar cleaning department and Valve Shop
* Monitors and manages shop efficiency in line with company metrics.
* Ensures the proper functioning and maintenance of department equipment and utilizes equipment as designed and intended.
* Ensures that the water used in the cleaning of railcars; is properly treated and meets the water quality parameters mandated by Permit prior to release to the municipal publicly operated treatment works (POTW) (as applicable).
* Ensures odiferous vapors do not disrupt other operating departments or of adjacent properties.
* Maintains current knowledge of government, industry, customer, and company policy, procedures, and work instructions.
* VOC emission reporting / tracking for cleaning activities.
* Schedules work on cars to meet customer commitments.
* Writes supplemental work sheets to charge the customer appropriately for un-estimated work.
* Holds departmental safety, quality, and production meetings.
* Performs in-process inspection on all work performed prior to cars leaving the department to ensure workmanship meets government, industry, customer, and company quality requirements.
* Manages, mentors, coaches, and trains team members on effective, safe, and quality based work requirements.
* Reviews and approves hourly time cards.
* Participates in root-cause investigations, and corrective and preventative actions to prevent recurrence.
Qualifications
* High School diploma or equivalent
* A minimum of 5-years of rail car Cleaning and Valve experience or similar heavy industrial experience
* Demonstrated past success in supervisory / management position.
* Organization, time management, leadership, and verbal / written communication skills are essential.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
This position requires indoor work, the physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid and dusty conditions.
The environment requires working in close proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, in high and low precarious places, as well as in confined spaces.
The work type is best described as heavy, hands-on mechanical work.
Work is very physical, and without proper work planning can result in out of position pushing, pulling and lifting.
Proper body mechanics, positioning and lifting techniques can be very important.
Employees are urged to seek help when needed with heavier tasks, and to use lifting equipment when and where necessary.
The positioning of the work being performed can change very frequently.
Various heavier air and electric powered tools such as car jacks, impact wrenches, and grinders are used daily.
Work also requires frequent use of hand wrenches, hammers, chisels, socket wrenches, and ladders.
Cutting torches are also used, with welding equipment used upon qualification of employee.
* Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, smelling and visual acuity, with color and depth perception
* Ability to work in a confined space
* Required to use personal protective equipment as environmental conditions dictate
